Piñatex is a natural material that comes from the waste of pineapple plantations in the Philippines. The local population is involved in the harvest and in the early stages of processing that lead the leaves of the pineapple plant to become a real vegetable skin: separation of the cellulose fibers from the remaining biomass, drying and weaving according to the ancient techniques. The transformation is completed in Spain, the fibers are mixed with PLA and a petroleum-based resin, to form a non-woven fabric in different colors and workable like a common leather, of which it retains the main properties.
